We all struggle to drift off every now and again. But for Daisy Maskell, the UK's youngest ever breakfast radio presenter for KISS Fresh, it’s more than just the odd night spent tossing and turning. Daisy has insomnia, which doesn’t make those 5 am wake up calls any easier…
We spoke to Daisy about how CBD oil has helped her on her sleep journey, and the tips and tricks she’s learned along the way on winding down before bed.
what’s your relationship like with sleep?
I've suffered from insomnia since the age of 9. It feels like, while the rest of the world is asleep and doing what their bodies are supposed to do, I’m sitting upright in bed watching the clock until my 5 am alarm chimes.
how have those sleepless nights affected you?
The physical effects can be hard to deal with, but it’s the knock-on effect on my mental health that I find most exhausting.
what do you do to help yourself fall asleep?
I have 4 main sleep rules that I try to live by:
- Self care isn’t a treat, it’s a requirement. Having a pre-bed routine to help me wind down is key. I deserve a hot bath with salts or a facemask any day, not just at the end of a long working week.
- Sleep structure and consistency is so important. It’s an investment for my present and future self. I also found CBT-I (cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia) and sleep diaries make a huge difference.
- Clean room, clean mind. That includes clean sheets and bedding. I’ve also played around with mood lighting and scents to stage a space that’s less of a pressure cooker, and more of an inviting safe haven.
- Use CBD oil to relax the mind. It really calms me. I use the 3000mg strength camomile and passionflower CBD oil. It’s a stronger tincture, which I’ve found helps me to wind down.
so when did you start taking CBD oil to help you sleep?
I decided to embark on my CBD journey at the start of 2022. After my documentary came out - Daisy Maskell: Insomnia and Me - recommendations for me to try CBD oil came in droves. As I’ve had almost 14 years of battling sleepless nights and bedtime anxiety, I decided to take the plunge.
any tips for someone trying CBD oil for the first time?
Everybody’s dosage is different, and it can take time to find the right one for you. I always advise trying a routine out for a few days, and then playing with the dosage if it doesn’t work until you land on a combination that helps you.
how’s your sleep now?
I’m starting to see the light at the end of a very long tunnel. I may never be ‘cured’, but CBD oil has definitely helped me wind down at night. I feel like I finally have the tools I need to gain control of my waking and sleeping life.
